Staff Selection Commission of India, conducts the stenographer examination almost every year. This post comes under grade C & D categories. Exam for both the grades will be held at the same time.
This test is conducted all over India, for filling the vacant post in union ministry, central government offices and for an autonomous organization that comes under union ministry.
SSC Stenographer Exam 2019
As per Staff Selection Commission’s tentative annual calendar, notification for SSC stenographer post is expected to release on 17th September 2019.
The test will be conducted all over India. The number of vacancies will be notified in the official notification. Last year for group C and group D post, 1276 and 429 appointments were made respectively, so this year it is expected to be the same.
The person who writes in shorthand and then transcribes that shorthand on a typewriter or a computer is called stenographer.
So the basic knowledge of typewriter and computer is needed for the job. The number of vacancies will be notified later.

Any candidate appearing for the SSC Stenographer exam, must fulfill the following eligibility criteria.
Applicant should be the citizen of India, the subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with an intention of permanently settling in India.
Age criteria for the different grade are different.
- For Group C post, candidate should be 18 to 30 years of age.
- For Grade D post, the age of the candidate should be 18 to 27 years of age.
Relaxation in upper age limit is permissible to those who come under prescribed categories by the government.
The examinee should have completed their 12th standard (i.e. higher secondary) education or equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
Exam Pattern for SSC Stenographer
Question from General Intelligence, General Awareness, and English language will be asked. Unlike other SSC exams, in this exam question from quantitative aptitude will not be asked. The exam will be computer-based (objective type).

Syllabus for SSC Stenographer Exam
A two tier exam will be conducted for the recruitment of SSC Stenographer. One is computer-based multiple choice question while the other one is a skill test.

Tier-II (Skill test)
Those candidates who are able to qualify in Tier –I exam they will be called for skill test by the commission. Skill test will be of qualifying nature. Qualifying criteria for group C & D is different.
In this test candidate will have to write a dictation, they can write it in Hindi or English. But the speed of typing for the post of stenographer Group C should be 100 wpm (words per minute) and for Group D post it will be 80 wpm (words per minute).

**NOTE: The candidates who opt for Hindi will be required to learn English and vice versa within six months.

The application fee for this exam is ₹100 (one hundred). Payment of the fee can be done online or offline. Online payment can be made through credit/debit card or Rupay card.
Payment through internet banking is also accepted. If anyone wants to pay in offline mode then they can download the challan and pay in any of the SBI branches.
The application fee for Schedule Cast, Schedule Tribe, Physically Handicapped, Ex-Servicemen and Female candidates are exempted.
Job Prospects of SSC Stenographer
Task of a stenographer is to transcribe the spoken words into shorthand and later put that shorthand back into words.
For this job speed and accuracy is needed. They need to be present in the meeting and shorthand the points discussed in the meeting and later compile a detail report for government record and reference.
Their duty includes:
- Being present at the press briefing,
- Assist the officer/minister,
- Writing speech for the officer/minister,
- Helping in public relation,
- Maintaining the official diary and
- Handling of the official document.
**NOTE: Stenographer Posts are not identified for the hearing impaired person.
Salary of SSC Stenographer
Group C Stenographer will get Grade Pay of Pay Band 2 whereas for Group D Stenographer Grade Pay will be of Pay Band 1.
