Kulman Ghising
Many of us don’t even hear of this name. Lots of people are unknown about his works. But, this man Kulman Ghising deserves a big round of applause for his extraordinary works in power sector of the Himalayan state, Nepal.

Let’s start with a brief introduction of this person. Mr. Kulman Ghising is the Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Since his appointment as the head of the organisation (NEA), the electric power supply scenario of Nepal has come across a revolutionary change.

The Background

The story began in September 2016, when Mr. Ghising was appointed as the Managing Director of NEA. Nepal was always tagged as an energy-starved nation and scheduled power cuts or load sheddings were part of the normal life there. The businesses depending on electricity were extremely affected by such power cuts and even let the owners shut their businesses on those hours. Generator expenses for long hours were taking a toll on the margins of the business. Even the households were suffering badly due to power shortages.

A local resident said- the situation was so grim that they have to face load shedding even up to 16 hrs a day in winter dry seasons.

Though officially it is yet to be announced as zero load shedding country, the dream has been fulfilled in major cities of Nepal and in other parts, the time is around 2 hrs of load shedding on alternative days.

The Change

Some of the affluent citizens may find the change nothing special, rather will find it very ordinary, but, this major facelift in an energy-starving country has revolutionised the lifestyle of every people residing in Nepal. There are

lesser stoppages in business hours, homemakers now enjoy their tv soaps without interruptions, business houses can minimise their generator expenses and so on.

The Roadmap

a) A group of employees in the Nepal Electricity Authority were involved in various corrupt practices until Kulman Ghising was anointed as the head of the organisation. Vested interest groups were distributing illegal power supply to selected business house in lieu of commission. In fact, many employees of NEA were also involved in their personal businesses of selling electricity gadgets

like inverter, solar panel, generator etc. Ghising observed such things deeply and took action to eradicate corruption in NEA. Though he was protested and challenged by various interest groups, Ghising was determined in his approach. As a result of which he succeeded in minimising the leakage of power and judiciously utilising it.

b) Ghising tries to address some basic inefficiencies in tackling power-cuts. He started with overhauling the hydropower generating systems that were lying idle due to financial and technical crunches.

c) He made a policy of storing water at times when the demand for electricity is low, so more could be generated during peak hours.

d) There was serious mismanagement in the distribution of power to various industries. In fact, there was a disparity in distribution, where some were getting 24 hrs, some industries got 12 hrs. and some even 8 hrs of electricity a day. Mr. Ghising sorted out those inequalities and made a policy of equality in NEA.

e) He launched a public awareness campaign to encourage people to avoid wastage of electricity and appeal them to avoid electricity guzzling activities like ironing, pumping water during peak hours especially in the evening when the demand is at its highest. He is also planning to install smart meters for preventing leakage and theft of electricity.

Kulman Ghising has taken some steps though very fundamental yet it resulted in a revolutionary change in the Himalayan State. And the days are no far when Nepal would be a country with

zero load shedding. This phenomenal change has not only enlighten the streets of Nepal but glorifies the human endeavour and a will to serve the nation.
