Recently I came up with a request from one my readers to write about “Interior Design Courses” and the career prospects of an interior designer. Though I know that it exists but, frankly speaking, I was not well-versed on the topic.

Exams for Pursuing Interior Design Courses

Since Interior Design Course is a special course of designing, you need to opt for the exams which will let you get admission in the institutions which offers Under Graduation OR Post Graduation degree or diploma in interior design courses.

1) NID DAT Exam

National Institute of Design (NID) is one of the most reputed institutions of Design in India that offers UG and PG design courses on its various campuses. Admission into these courses is done through NID Entrance Exam called as Design Aptitude Test (DAT) followed by Studio Test and Personal Interview conducted and organized by NID itself.

The four-years long B.Des programme is offered at Ahmedabad campus, two and a half years M.Des programme is offered at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar campuses and GDPD (Graduate Diploma Programme in Design) is offered at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for NID Admission for UG and PG courses is given below:

For B.Des & GDPD Programme :

  • Age limit: The prescribed upper age limit is 20 years (3 years relaxation for reserved category).
  • Qualifying Examination: Candidates who have Passed/Appearing 12th examination from the recognized educational board are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates appearing the qualifying examination have to submit the proof of passing the examination at the time of admission.

For M.Des Programme:

  • Age limit: Maximum age limit is 30 years. Relaxation of 3 years shall be given to reserved category and 5 years relaxation for PWD candidates.
  • Qualifying Examination: Candidates who have passed/appearing bachelor’s degree in any discipline under the 10+2+4 (or more) system are eligible to apply.
    Or
    Diploma in design under 10+2+4 system.
    Or
    Candidates passed the bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) under the system 10+2+3 are eligible to apply.

2) IIAD Design Aptitude Test

IIAD entrance exam also known as IIAD Design Aptitude Test (IIAD DAT) is conducted by Indian Institute of Art and Design in collaboration with Kingston School of Art at Kingston University, London to provide admission to aspirants in undergraduate design programmes offered by it.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates those wish to apply for IIAD DAT examination must check all the eligibility conditions that are necessary to apply:

  • Qualifying Examination: All candidates who have passed CBSE/ ISC/ IB (or any other equivalent board) Standard XII exams in any discipline fulfill the IIAD entrance exam eligibility criteria.
  • Appearing Candidates: Candidates appearing the qualifying examination can also fill the IIAD DAT application form.
  • No Age Limit prescribed: There is no prescribed age limit as such to apply for IIAD DAT.

3) CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design)

Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is the national level examination conducted by IIT Bombay on behalf of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

CEED is a prerequisite examination for admission to M.Des and Ph.D. programmes in design and the scores are used for admission to M.Des courses in IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur and in many other institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates those wish to apply for CEED examination must check all the eligibility conditions that are necessary to apply:

  • Qualifying Examination: Candidate must possess degree/diploma/postgraduate degree of 4 years or 3+2 years (after 10+2) OR Passed GD Arts Diploma programme (10+5).
  • Appearing Candidates: Candidates appearing the qualifying examination can also fill the CEED application form.
  • No Age Limit: There is no prescribed age limit to apply for CEED.
  • Number of Limits: Candidates can appear CEED any number of times.

4) UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design)

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay conducts Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design  (UCEED) under the guidance of the UCEED Admissions Committee. Aspirants, who are looking to get an admission in Bachelor of Degree programme (BDes) need to appear for UCEED exam.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for UCEED Admission 2019 for UG courses is given below:

  • Age limit: The prescribed upper age limit is 25 years (3 years relaxation for reserved category).
  • Qualifying Examination: Candidates who have Passed/Appearing 12th examination from the recognized educational board are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates appearing the qualifying examination have to submit the proof of passing the examination at the time of admission.

5) AIEED (All India Entrance Exam for Design)

AIEED is an All India Entrance Exam for Design. ARCH Academy of Design conducts the AIEED for admission to various UG & PG courses. It is a national level entrance examination. The exam is conducted to screen the students for the various designing courses offered by the academy. Through this exam, students can get admissions into Strategic Management, Leadership Programme & the Design Management Programmes.

Eligibility Criteria

The student can check their eligibility under this section:

For Undergraduate Courses:

  • Qualifying Exam: Students those passed the 10+2 or equivalent in any stream from the recognized board (CBSE/ICSE/IB/State Board/NIOS or equivalent as per UGC Guidelines) can apply.
  • Appearing Candidates: Appearing students (10+1) are also eligible to apply. Qualifying students will be eligible for direct admission after clearing the 3rd & last stage of the exam (as described above).
  • Age Criteria: Students those are 16 years and above are eligible to apply.

For Postgraduate Courses:

  • Qualifying Exam: Students must hold the graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
  • Appearing Candidates: Students those pursuing graduations are also eligible to apply for the examination.
  • Age Criteria: Students those are 19 years and above in age are eligible for sitting for the exam. Students who have done 2 years or 3 years diploma course in design are also eligible for this Advanced Level course.

6) Pearl Academy Entrance Exam

In order to apply for design programmes offered at the college, aspirants need to fill Pearl Academy Entrance Exam application form either in the online or offline mode. In the application form for Pearl Academy admissions, candidates need to fill information such as their personal details, choice of course, educational qualifications and work experience.

For Undergraduate Courses:

  • Qualifying Exam: Students those passed the 10+2 or equivalent in any stream from the recognized board can apply.
  • Appearing Candidates: Appearing students (10+1) are also eligible to apply. Qualifying students will be eligible for direct admission after clearing the 3rd & last stage of the exam (as described above).
  • Age Criteria: No age limit as such.

Interior Design Courses Fee

Interior designing is one of the most popular professions in the world and has huge prospects for the aspiring candidates. The interior design courses fee varies from institution to institution and from courses to courses.

The cheapest of them are the diploma courses provided by some of the deemed institutions and the most expensive of them are the degree courses offered by some the international private institutions.
