RRB JE is the recruitment exercise conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) for recruiting Junior Engineers (JE), Junior Engineers (IT), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), and Chemical and Metallurgy Assistant (CMA) to various departments of the railway.

The exam is conducted every year in online mode in two stages, Stage-I and Stage-II. Candidates clearing stage 2 are only eligible for document verification and medical test.

Junior Engineers works as Supervisor in the Civil Engineering department of railways. Also known as the inspector of works a JE is charged for the construction and maintenance of railway buildings such as water supply to the buildings, staff quarters and encroachment of Railway land etc.

The selection process is rigorous and entirely based on merit, according to CBTs. The date, time and venue of the exam is fixed by RRB and is intimated to eligible candidates in due time. The board does not entertain the request for changing of date, time or venue of the exam.

RRB JE Exam Eligibity Criteria 2021

  1. Nationality
  2. A candidate must be either:
    a. a citizen of India, or
    b. a subject of Nepal, or
    c. a subject of Bhutan, or
    d. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
    e. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
    f. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e)above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
    (ii) A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.

  3. Educational Qualification
    • Junior Engineer: Diploma/Degree in Engineering in the relevant discipline.
    • Junior Engineer (Information Technology): PGDCA/B.Sc. (Computer Science)/ BCA / B.Tech. (Information Technology)/ B.Tech. (Computer Science)/ DOEACC ‘B’ Level Course of 3 years duration or equivalent from recognised university/ institute.
    • Depot Material Superintendent: Diploma/Degree in Engineering from any discipline.
    • Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant: Bachelors Degree in Science with Physics and Chemistry.

  5. The age of the candidate to appear in the RRB JE examination should be minimum of 18 years and maximum of 33 years.
    However, there are age relaxations for candidates belonging to the reserved categories. They are given below in the table:

    Candidates who have been a domicile in the state of Jammu & Kashmir + OBC 41 years
    Candidates who are serving Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ Railway Staff, Casual Labour and Substitutes and put in minimum of 3 years service (continuous or in broken spells) 40 years
    Candidates who are working in Quasi-Administrative offices of the Railway organization such as Railway Canteens, Co-operative Societies and Institutes 38 years
    Women (widowed, judicially separated or divorced and not remarried) + General 35 years
    Women (widowed, judicially separated or divorced and not remarried) + SC/ST 40 years
    Women (widowed, judicially separated or divorced and not remarried) +OBC 38 years

  6. Restrictions on Attempts
  7. There is no restriction on the number of attempts for a candidate as long as the candidate fits the eligibility criteria.

RRB JE Exam Pattern 2021

  • The RRB JE is held in two stages, stage 1 and stage 2.
  • To clear stage 1, minimum passing marks of 40% for General Category candidates, OBC and SC 30% and 25% for ST candidates is required to qualify for stage 2.
  • Candidates after clearing stage 2 qualify for document verification and medical test.
  • To clear stage 2, minimum passing marks of 40% for General Category candidates, OBC and SC 30% and 25% for ST candidates is required to qualify.

Pattern for CBT Stage-I

The 1st stage of CBT is of screening nature and the standard of questions for the CBT will be generally in conformity with the educational standards and/or minimum technical qualifications prescribed for the posts. The normalized score of the 1st stage exam shall be used only for the short listing of candidates for the 2nd stage exam as per their merit. A composite time of 90 minutes is applicable for CBT Stage-I examination.
