NICL stands for National Insurance company limited, a company that was established in the year 1906 with its registered office in Kolkata. It is one of the leading companies in the field of public sector insurance, specialising in non-life insurance policies.
The insurance sector provides job opportunities for which examinations are conducted, to shortlist eligible candidates. The IRDA or Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India is the central authority responsible for promoting and maintaining the insurance industry’s growth in India.
The National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) is one of the most sought after and highly respected companies. The company conducts exams for three principal roles, namely:
- NICL Administrative Office
- NICL Assistant
- NICL Accounts Apprentice

NICL AO Exam Eligibity Criteria 2021
- Nationality
- Educational Qualification
- Age Limit The age of the candidate to appear in the NICL AO Exam should be minimum of 21 years and maximum of 30 years.
A candidate applying for recruitment in the Company must be either:—
a) a citizen of India, or
b) a subject of Nepal, or
c) a subject of Bhutan, or
d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
A candidate must possess the minimum qualification of a Graduate/Post Graduate in any discipline from a recognized University OR any equivalent qualification recognized as such by Central Government with at least 60% marks in either of the degree examination (at least 55% for SC/ST) candidates.
However, there are age relaxations for candidates belonging to the reserved categories. They are given below in the table:

There is no limit on the number of attempts until the candidate fulfil all the required eligibility criteria.

NICL AO Exam Pattern 2021
Important points regarding the pattern of the exam:
- The NICL AO exams as conducted by the National Insurance Company Limited take part in three phases.
- The first two levels include the Prelims and Mains, which take place online and the third level is Interview.
- All the papers, except that of the English Language, are conducted in both English and Hindi.
- the Descriptive Test of 30 Minutes duration with 30 marks will be a Test of English Language (Essay, Precis and Comprehension).
- The descriptive test will be in English and will be conducted through on line mode.
Pattern for Preliminary Exam
The Prelims is an objective paper of 60-minute duration. It consists of three sets, including the English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability.

Pattern for Main Exam
The Mains consist of two phases, one being the objective paper of a duration of 120 minutes and the other being an English Language descriptive paper of 30 minutes duration.

The descriptive English Language section consists of three questions, which are, Precis, Comprehension and Essay.
Syllabus for Interview
There is no specific syllabus for interview. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only a candidate’s intellectual qualities but also social traits and interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, the balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, the ability for social cohesion, LEADERSHIP, and intellectual and moral integrity.
