The National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) examination is being conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for enrolment to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the audience. Defence forces, including Army, Navy, and Air Force, candidate this gateway examination for aspiring candidates. The exam is being conducted by UPSC twice a year.

The Candidates are recruited by the UPSC through a Written Examination followed by extensive interviews by the Services Selection Board covering general aptitude, psychological testing, team skills as well as physical and social skills, along with medical tests.

NDA & NA Exam Eligibity Criteria 2021

  1. Nationality
  2. (i) a citizen of India, or
    (ii) a subject of Nepal, or
    (iii) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

    Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii) and (iii), above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

  3. Educational Qualification
    • For Army Wing of National Defence Academy:-12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
    • For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy:-12th Class pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

  4. Age Limit
  5. The age of the candidate to appear in the NDA & NA examination should be minimum of 16.5 years and maximum of 19.5 years.

  6. Restrictions on Attempts
  7. There are no restrictions on the number of attempts for UPSC National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) Examination.

NDA & NA Exam Pattern 2021

The NDA & NA exams take place in two steps, the main exam and the interview round, strictly on the basis of the guidelines placed by the conducting body UPSC.
The candidates qualifying for the main exam are eligible for appearing in the interview round held by SSB. The qualifying marks for the interview round is decided by UPSC. The main examination paper has two parts namely, Maths and General Ability Test.

Pattern for Intelligence and Personality Test

Total marks allotted: 900

The Intelligence and Personality Test is conducted by the Services Selection Board. The interview procedure consists of a two-stage selection process- Stage-I and Stage-II. Only those candidates who clear Stage-I are permitted to appear for Stage-II. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

Syllabus for Intelligence and Personality Test

(a) Stage-I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception* Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on the combination of performance in OIR Test and PP&DT.

(b) Stage-II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference.
