Manipur Judicial Service examination is conducted by the Gauhati High Court to hire subordinates in judicial services for Grade-I (Practising Lawyers) & Grade-III (Fresh Graduates) positions within the State of Manipur. While Grade-II Judicial Officers are appointed by seniority and departmental competitive examination conducted by the High Court.
A portion of the Grade -I Judicial officers are filled by merit cum seniority basis by the High Court and such a number of vacancies are mentioned in the Examination notification. The Examination is conducted as per the rules given under Manipur Judicial Service Rules, 2005 (as amended).
Grade-I Judicial Officer means the Judicial Officer designated as District-Judge & Additional District-Judge on the Civil side and Sessions-Judge & Additional Sessions-Judge on the Criminal side (as the case may be).
These exams focus on Indian legal and constitutional governance and history, current developments of national and international interest, and analytical aptitude and skills of the candidate.

MJS Grade-I Exam Eligibity Criteria 2021
- Educational Qualification
A candidate must be a citizen of India as defined in Article 5 & 6 of the Constitution of India.
To be eligible to appear in the Manipur Judicial Service Grade-I Exam, the candidate must:
- Be a holder of Degree in Law from a recognized university.
- Be practising as an Advocate in the Courts of Civil and Criminal jurisdiction, on the last date fixed for receipt of applications, for not less than seven (7) years as on such date.
- Must have knowledge of State Official language (Manipuri).
However, there are age relaxations for candidates belonging to the reserved categories. They are given below in the table:

There is no attempt restriction for the candidates provided the upper age limit has not been exceeded.
Manipur Judicial Service Grade-I Job Prospects
The Judicial system consists of five hierarchies namely- Supreme Court, High Court, District Court, Magistrate Court, and Munsiff Court. Judges are assigned to different court departments based on their qualifications. Some judges operate in their private offices, courtrooms and law libraries. Most of the work includes reading legal briefs, studying legal issues, conducting a hearing with lawyers, and giving the judgment. The responsibility of the judges varies depending on their jurisdiction.
A career in the judiciary is a good option for law graduates or for practising lawyers who are inclined towards public service and have faith in the system of justice.

MJS Grade-I Exam Pattern 2021
The selection process of Manipur Judicial Service Grade-I examination segregated into two stages. One stage is followed by another.
- Stage 1: Main Written Examination
- Stage 2: Viva-Voce/ Interview
Pattern for Main Written Examination
The Main Written Examination will be of 300 marks comprising three papers i.e. Paper – I, Paper-II, & Paper-III. A total of 300 marks will be considered for raking. All the candidates must obtain 50% or more marks or corresponding grade in the Final written examination to be eligible for Viva-Voce.
The candidates will be called on the basis of 1:3 ratio i.e. 3 (Three) candidates will be called against 1 (one) vacancy for the Viva-Voce.

This is the final stage of the Grade-I examination.
The final evaluation will be based on marks obtained in the Final Written Examination and Viva- Voce. The selected candidates must secure 40% marks in the Viva – Voce/ Interview. However, the final selection shall be made subject to the overall suitability of the candidate, as decided by the High Court.

Syllabus for Viva-Voce/Interview
There is no specified syllabus for Viva – Voce but the interview is intended to supplement the written examination for testing the general and specialized knowledge in law & other subjects as well as the abilities to solve the problem during the course of work.
The Board will pay special attention to assess:
- intellectual curiosity,
- critical powers of assimilation,
- balance of judgment and alertness of mind,
- the ability for social cohesion,
- integrity of character initiative and
- capacity for leadership.
The candidate will be expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in his/her subjects of law but also in events which are happening around him/her both within and outside his/her own State or Country.
They must have knowledge in the field of Current Affairs, New Discoveries & Inventions also. The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross-examination, but of a natural, through directed and purposive conversation intended to reveal the candidate’s mental qualities and his/her grasp of problems.
