Judge Advocate General Branch

This exam helps a law graduate to enter into Indian Army. After qualifying for this exam, candidates are selected to the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch. They are recruited as legal officer of the branch.

JAG officers provide legal help to the military in all aspects, in particular advising the presiding officers of courts-martial on military law. JAG officers conduct all legal procedures from framing drafts to appearing at courts and military tribunals.

JAG Exam Eligibity Criteria 2021

  1. Nationality
  2. A candidate must either be:

    • (i)A citizen of India, or
    • (ii) A subject of Nepal,
    • (iii) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India, provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii) and (iii) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. Certificate of eligibility will, however, not be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

  3. Educational Qualification
  4. Minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB Degree (three years professional after graduation or five years after 10+2 examination). The candidates should be eligible for registration as an advocate with the Bar Council of India/State. The candidate should be from a College/University recognized by the Bar Council of India.

  5. Age Limit
  6. The age of the candidate to appear in the JAG examination should be minimum of 21 years and maximum of 27 years.

  7. Restrictions on Attempts
  8. There is no restriction on the number of attempts provided the upper age limit does not exceed.

JAG Exam Pattern 2021

  • Initial shortlisting of applications will be done by Recruiting Directorate, Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) and the decision of DG Recruiting will be final.
  • The shortlisted candidates whose applications are found to be correct shall be detailed for SSB interview at allotted Selection Centres on specified dates.
  • A two-stage selection procedure based on Psychological Aptitude Test is held at Selection Centres. All the candidates will face stage one test on the first day of reporting at Selection Centres. The candidates who fail to pass stage one will be returned on the same day.
  •  Candidates who qualify stage I will be retained for the Stage -II test comprising of Group Tests, Psychological Tests and Interview which will extend for a duration of 4 days (excluding stg-I day).
  • Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit will be issued a joining letter for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies available, subject to meeting all eligibility criteria.

Pattern for Personal Interview

Syllabus for Personal Interview

There is no particular syllabus for the JAG SSB interview. The interview is intended to test the professional knowledge as well as the personality of the candidate.

The selection committee will pay special attention to assess alertness of mind, leadership quality, critical powers of assimilation etc.
