The present Directorate of Urban Affairs traces its genesis to the Department of Town & Country Planning & Housing which was established after the attainment of statehood in 1972 along with the adoption of the Assam Town & Country Planning Act, 1954, 1962 and 1963. The Department was bifurcated in the year 1982. The Department of Town and Country Planning was renamed as the Department of Urban Development in 1988. In 1990, the Department of Municipal Administration was amalgamated with the Department of Urban Development and a new Department of Urban Affairs was created to give more emphasis on urban planning.
The functions and objectives of the Urban Affairs Department are basically focused on planning, development and proper management of the urban areas in the State. Keeping the above-mentioned objectives in mind, the Department focuses on the preparation of Master Plans of the urban Centre. Stress is given on the improvement of civic amenities and revamping the urban infrastructure in the urban centers.
