NEP Will Boost Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education: Prof (Dr) Sanjiv Marwah

B-schools students will benefit tremendously from the NEP 2020 as they will get the necessary exposure and experience of the real business world, says Prof (Dr) Sanjiv Marwah, Director, JK Business School, in conversation with Priyanka Sharma of Bihog Infomedia.

1. How new curriculum and pedagogical structure will play a vital role in the overall development of the students?

National Education Policy 2020 is a comprehensive framework to guide the development of education in the country. Built on the fundamental pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability, NEP 2020 is much aligned to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that aims to transform India into a vibrant knowledge society hub and global knowledge superpower by making education system of our country more holistic, flexible and multidisciplinary, which is suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each individual.

With the emphasis on Early Childhood Care and Education, the 10+2 structure of education is to be replaced by a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years respectively. The curricula will aim for the holistic development of learners, equipping them with the key 21st-century skills, reduction in curricular content to enhance essential learning and critical thinking, and a greater focus on experiential learning. Students will now have more flexibility to choose the subjects of their choice so that they decide their own paths according to their talents and interests.

The motto behind this transformation into holistic and multidisciplinary education is to develop all capacities of human beings -intellectual, aesthetic, social, physical, emotional, and moral in an integrated manner. With this technical and management institutions will move towards a more holistic and multidisciplinary education which will help students not only polishing the analytics skills but also soft skills which are a must for the overall development of the students.

2. How will blended learning offer flexibility to students in choosing a career of their own choice?

The curriculum of all B-schools will be revised and become more rigorous and skill-oriented with the announcement of NEP 2020. Practical knowledge and application-based learning will be the key focus of all the institutions. Blended learning is an important pedagogy in B-Schools and the same has been put forward quite well in the NEP 2020.

Blended learning broadens the horizon and develops skill sets, which are essential for the students to succeed in 21st century’s technologically advanced environment. Also, it offers flexibility to students to enroll in part-time courses so that they have more control over how they choose to structure their personal learning experience. Blended education offers online components to allow for increased flexibility, but one can still attend classes, interact with cohort and professors, and build a business network in a similar way as in a full-time course which is need of the hour.

3. What do you think multilingualism and power of the language – the new practice in the B-Schools?

NEP 2020 lays great emphasis on promoting multilingualism so that children know and learn about the rich and vast array of languages of their country. To ensure the preservation, growth, and vibrancy of all Indian languages, several initiatives are envisaged. More HEIs, and more programmes in higher education and B-schools, will use the mother tongue/local language as a medium of instruction, and/or offer programmes bilingually; in order to increase access and GER. This will help to promote the strength, usage, and vibrancy of all Indian languages. An Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI) will be established.

All Indian language institutes and departments across the country will be significantly strengthened. Efforts to preserve and promote all Indian languages including classical, tribal and endangered languages will be undertaken by all the institutions of the country. Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the B-Schools in the country and National and State curriculum materials developed, for use by students with hearing impairment. The aim behind this is to ensure that no student lags behind and there should be a fair opportunity for all.

4. How National Education Policy 2020 will help to produce industry-ready candidates?

The NEP 2020 envisages a broad spectrum of multi-disciplinary holistic education at both the undergraduate and higher education levels.  With NEP 2020 there will be rigorous exposure to all subjects with special focus on imaginative and flexible curricular structures, creative combinations of study, and integration of vocational education with multiple entry/ exit points.

Holistic and multidisciplinary education will help develop well-rounded individuals who possess critical 21st-century capacities across professional, technical, and vocational fields. With the perfect amalgamation of soft and hard skills, institutes will able to produce industry-ready candidates.

A new vision and outlook for higher education has been envisaged with large, well-resourced, vibrant multidisciplinary institutions. A university will now mean a multidisciplinary institution of higher learning that offers undergraduate and graduate programmes with high-quality teaching, research, community engagement and a special focus on blended learning.

B-schools students will benefit tremendously from the NEP 2020 as they will get the necessary exposure and experience of the real business world. Moreover, all the skills and knowledge needed for real business will be imparted. Earlier, only theoretical knowledge was being imparted which was not clearly applicable in businesses.

This step of the government will aid in preparing highly skilled professionals for the future. India will reap the benefit of this move in the next 40-50 years. Our country will become more developed and highly skilled. The NEP 2020 is a step towards a brighter future for the country as well as the students.

5. Internationalization of education is the key feature of NEP 2020. How this will help students to cope with oversees practices?

Internationalization of Education is the key feature of NEP 2020 with great emphasis on student’s practical and application knowledge. It targets creating India as a knowledge hub attracting foreign nationals and to promote research collaboration and student exchanges between Indian institutions and global institutions through organized efforts. Exchange of Credits between foreign universities and home institutes will be permitted, to be counted for the award of a degree in appropriation as per HEI. This is a multi-beneficiary significant reform that should benefit in seamless education and industrial jobs across the globe.

It will also boost international business relations in not only education but in support services and other sectors also as the passed-out students would have become more aware with Indian culture, socio-economic diversity, trade regulations, industry strengths and many more.
