10 NIACL AO Preparation Tips to Build Your Career in Public Sector

NIACL AO exam is conducted by the New India Assurance Company Limited (NIACL) to recruit eligible candidates for the posts of General Assistant Officer and Specialist Officer every year. This is done in two categories AO Generalist and AO Specialist.

The exam is conducted in three stages. These are the Preliminary exam, Main exam and Interview. The preliminary exam consists of three sections including the English language, Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude. The pattern of the Preliminary exam will be the same for both Generalist and Specialist whereas the Main exam will be held differently.

The Main exam for Generalists consists of four sections including Reasoning, English Language, General Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude and for Specialists besides the four sections asked generalists, professional/technical knowledge will also be tested.

1. Know the Exam

To get a good result in any exam, you should make yourself familiar with the syllabus and pattern of the exam. By going through the previous years’ question papers, you will be able to know the exam pattern.

By knowing the syllabus, you will be able to stay organized. Moreover, you will also be able to manage your time when you know the syllabus.

2. Keep Revising

You should keep revising the topics you have studied earlier. If you don’t keep revising you will forget the topics which will consume time to learn them again. The revision will help you to retain the topics for a longer period of time.

To memorise the topics, you may stick them by writing on the paper on the wall of your study room.

3. Practise Mock Tests

Practising mock tests will help you to revise the topics and help you to know about your preparation. You will also gain confidence while practising mock tests.

Join online mock test sessions conducted by various online coaching websites. Don’t forget to check the answer after the test.


4. Study Regularly

Regular study will help you to keep pace with the syllabus and you won’t feel burden before the exam which will reduce the stress. By doing the regular study, you will also be able to focus on the exam. Thus you won’t get distracted.

5. Be Calm

Try to stay calm during the exam. You can always make the right decision while being calm. If you stay calm during the exam, you will not feel nervous and will be able to attempt the questions confidently.

Subject Wise Preparation Tips

To get an idea about the subject wise preparation for NIACL AO exam you should go through the following tips:

1. Preparation for the English Language

The English language is part of both the Preliminary exam and Main exam. The syllabus of the English language include close test, reading comprehension, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, para summary, para completion, error spotting etc.

The preliminary exam is of objective type and the main exam is of descriptive type. To make yourself ready for both types of patterns, you should clear the concept of each topic. Follow such English grammar books which help you to make your concept clear. You should also improve your writing skill for attempting the descriptive type questions.


2. Preparation for Reasoning Ability

Some of the topics asked in this subject are coding-decoding, blood relations, number series, order and ranking, puzzles, syllogism etc. Solve the questions related to these topics require speed and accuracy. To increase the speed and accuracy, you need to practise as many mock tests as possible.

3. Preparation for Quantitative Aptitude

The topics asked in this section include data interpretation, simplification, Number Series, Quadratic Equations, Quantity based problems, Ratio & Proportion, Percentage & Averages, Profit & Loss etc.

To score in this section you must understand the rules to solve the problems. In some cases, you may also have to apply the formula.  After understanding the rules, you should keep practising them not to forget. You should also practise mock tests which will help you to increase your confidence.

4. Preparation for General Awareness

In the General Awareness section, questions will be asked from various topics including Banking, Insurance & Financial Awareness, Current Affairs, History, Culture, Politics, Awards and Recognitions, Geography, General Science etc.

Since the ambit of General awareness is vast, you should focus more on this section. To cover current affairs, read the newspaper every day and also read monthly magazines. For the static part, you may read Lucent’s General Knowledge book. Go through previous years’ question papers to get an idea about the questions asked related to this section.


NIACL AO exam is one of the tough exams that require a lot of effort to succeed in this exam. Without serious preparation, it is difficult to crack the exam.
