The Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the services that cater to the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India in the field of engineering.
The Exam is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit engineers in four domains i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunications for the Techno-Managerial posts.
Although lakhs of engineering graduates appear for this coveted exam, only a few are able to crack it.
One requires meticulous preparation and unwavering dedication to clear the exam successfully. Some of the preparation tips have been mentioned below:
1. Know the Syllabus
The first step of preparation for any exam starts with knowing the syllabus. The syllabus gives you an idea about the exam. By going through the syllabus you can also get an idea about the difficulty level of the exam.
Many candidates who cleared various competitive exams successfully admit that it’s not important to read the whole syllabus. Try to find out the more important and less important topics. It will save you time when you differentiate between the more important and less important topics.
2. Know the Exam Pattern
You can know the exam pattern by going through previous years’ question papers. Exam pattern will give you an idea about the marks distribution, stages of the exam, question pattern etc.
When you understand the exam pattern you understand the exam well and can make the proper strategy for the exam which increases the chance of your success in the exam.
3. Collect Study Material
Once you are familiar with the syllabus and exam pattern, collect books and study material from reliable sources. Be careful while buying books and gathering study materials.
Do the research and take time while buying books for any subject. Go through the contents of the book and compare the syllabus with the contents. One good book is sufficient rather than collecting two to three books for a subject.
4. Study Regularly
Since this exam is a highly competitive exam, you should study regularly. Regular study will help you to focus on the exam. You will also be able to complete the syllabus on time.
While studying, try to apply the OK4R method where O stands for Overview, K stands for Key ideas, and 4R stands for Read, Recall, Reflect and Review. The method has been described below:
- Overview: In this stage, you should read the headings, introduction and summaries to get a general idea about the chapter.
- Key Ideas: Again go back to the beginning of the chapter and go through the first sentence of each paragraph, italics and bold type text, tables, pictures and diagrams.
- Reading: Now read through the whole chapter and see the full explanation of ideas.
- Recall: Once you are done with reading, keep your book aside and try to write down the important points in small sentences.
- Reflect: Think about the topics and find out their significance. Also, try to find their relationship with other topics.
- Review or Revision: After completing the whole chapter, you should revise them after few days so that you don’t forget them.
Revise the topics you have studied earlier. The revision will help you to retain the information for a longer period of time. When you keep revising the topics you have studied earlier, you won’t feel much pressure before the exam.
Remembering the keywords is one of the easy ways of remembering the whole topic. Try to remember the keywords and also keep revising them. Keywords help a lot during the exam.
6. Make a Proper Study Plan
Without a proper plan, it is difficult to achieve something in life. The plan is required in every walk of life. When you are preparing for an exam, you should make a proper study plan. It helps you to maintain discipline in your study by paying attention to each subject equally.
Try to study the same subject at the same time and place. Thus your brain will be able to make associations with the topics and can recall them.
7. Time Management
Time management is one of the important skills required to clear a highly competitive exam like Engineering Services. You should practice previous years question paper to manage your time during the exam.
You may apply the Pomodoro technique to manage your time effectively. Pomodoro technique emphasises taking small breaks during the task. You may take a break of 5 minutes after doing a task continuously for 25 minutes. Thus you may divide a big task into various sessions. By applying this technique you may increase your productivity.
8. Don’t Take Much Stress
Try to avoid stress. Stress adds more problems to life. Due to taking much stress, you become unable to act in the right direction. Meditation and regular exercise help you to get rid of stress.
9. Take Care of Health
There is a saying that Health is Wealth. Without good health, it is not possible to achieve anything great in life. Taking care of your health is of utmost importance to concentrate on study without any distraction.
To maintain good health, you should do exercise regularly, eat healthy food and avoid junk food, drink plenty of water.
10. Do Meditation
Meditation helps you to reduce stress, increase concentration level and also increase memory. By doing meditation, you can maintain good mental health.
When you practice meditation, you stay calm and it will help you a lot during the exam.
11. Don’t Panic
Think positively. Negative thought creates panic in your mind and increases stress that leads to loss of your confidence.
There is the possibility that, due to a lack of confidence, you will fail to answer the questions correctly even though you find the questions easy.
