10 Preparation Tips for IBPS Clerk Exam

IBPS clerk exam is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit qualified candidates for the clerical cadre posts. The candidates who are finally selected are posted in the public sector banks of the country.

A clerical cadre is an entry-level post for any candidate willing to become a banker. A clerk is required to look after the daily activities of the bank and at the same time, is responsible for addressing the queries brought in by the customers.

Since the IBPS Clerk Exam 2022 is around the corner, you should start your preparation vigorously. It is one of the highly competitive exams, therefore, you need to devote a lot of time and prepare for the exam with dedication. The following preparation tips may help you to get a successful result in the IBPS Clerk exam.

1. Know the Exam

To clear an exam successfully, you must have to be familiar with the exam very well. The best way to be familiar with the exam is to go through the syllabus and the exam pattern.

By going through the syllabus, you get an idea about the topics to be studied and included in a subject. You should also go through the previous years’ question papers so that you find out the important topics in the syllabus. Thus you will be able to differentiate between more important and less important topics.

The exam is divided into two parts including the Preliminary exam and the Main exam. The Preliminary exam carries a total of 100 marks and the Main exam carries a total of 200 marks. In the Preliminary exam, there are three sections including Reasoning Ability, Numerical Ability and English Language. Whereas the Main exam includes General and Financial Awareness, English Language, Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude and Quantitative Aptitude.

2. Collect the Study Materials

Once you are familiar with the exam, you should start collecting study materials from reliable sources. You should be careful while buying books for the IBPS Clerk exam. Try to research and compare with the syllabus when you go to buy the books.

3. Study Regularly

The regular study helps you to complete the syllabus on time. It also helps you to stay focused on the exam. Prepare a study plan and study accordingly. It helps you to study with discipline.

Try to follow the OK4R study method. OK4R stands for Overview, Key Ideas, Read, Recall, Reflect and Review respectively. The meaning of the terms have been discussed below:

  • Overview: In this step, read the headings, introduction, table of contents and summaries to get a general idea about the chapter or topic.
  • Key Ideas: Key ideas are located in the first sentence of each paragraph and in diagrams. Once you have done overviewing the chapter, you should find out the key ideas.
  • Read: After Finding the key ideas, you should read through the whole chapter from the beginning to the end.
  • Recall: In this step, keep your book aside and try to recall the main points of what you have read.
  • Reflect: After recalling, you should find out the significance of the topic you have learned. You should also try to relate what you have read to things that you already know.
  • Review: Once you have completed the topic, you should revise them after a few days.

4. Apply Pomodoro Technique

Pomodoro technique emphasises taking a small break while doing a big task. When you do a task for 25 minutes take a break of 5 minutes. Thus you will be able to manage your time effectively. By applying the Pomodoro technique, you don’t feel exhausted and concentrate on the task, which also increases your productivity. Thus you are able to do a task for a longer period of time.

5. Prepare a Study Plan

Without a plan, it is difficult to do a big task successfully. There is also a chance that you may distract from your path without a plan. To get a successful outcome in an exam, you should try to prepare a study plan and stick to that. By following a study plan, you will be able to study with discipline.

Try to study the same subject at the same time and place. Thus your brain will be able to make an association with the subjects and recall things faster. For example, if you study Quantitative Aptitude on Monday at 7 pm, then you should stick to that time. While preparing a study plan, you should try to include difficult subjects in your study plan in the morning. Because during that time you can concentrate to the fullest. When you get tired in the evening, you should study less difficult subjects like General knowledge, current affairs, English etc.

6. Prepare Notes

Notes will help you to make your revision easy before the exam. Try to make the notes in an easy and comprehensible manner. Try to make the notes in digital format. Thus you will be able to add the other information in the existing notes.

Keep your notes short make the bullet points. It will help you to remember the topics faster and you find it easy to recall them later. One of the important benefits of preparing notes is that you build a habit of writing the answer which will help you during the exam.

7. Read News Paper

There are many benefits of reading newspapers. It will help you to keep yourself updated with current affairs and also improve your vocabulary.

Try to make notes of important topics which you find relevant to the exam. By reading the editorial articles, you will be able to gain knowledge of various important social issues. Besides, you will also be able to improve your vocabulary from the editorial articles.

Since the IBPS Clerk exam is a banking exam, you should focus more on banking awareness and financial news. To keep yourself updated with banking and financial awareness, you may read Economic Times, Business Standard etc.


8. Don’t Be Nervous

Stay positive during the exam. Attempt the easy questions first and it will increase your self-confidence to attempt the other questions further. Nervousness makes you panic and decrease your self-confidence. Try to avoid thinking about success and failure. Try to focus on your study.

Even when you are writing in the exam and you fail to answer some of the questions, you should not worry much. Instead of worrying, you should focus on attempting those questions you are sure about. Since there will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks, you should attempt those questions only when you are sure about their answer.

9. Take Care of Your Health

Health plays an important role to get success in any work. When you have good health you will be able to study for a long period, which will also increase the chance of getting success in the exam.

To maintain good health do regular exercise. By doing regular exercise you will be able to protect yourself from many diseases. Exercise also helps you to stay away from lethargy. Besides, always try to maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.

10. Do Meditation

Besides physical health, you should also take care of your mental health. To take care of your mental health, you should do meditation for 10 to 15 minutes every day.

Meditation increases the level of your concentration. You will also be able to pay attention for a longer period of time.
